The Beara-Breifne Way

The Beara-Breifne Way is Ireland’s longest waymarked walking route, tracing the historic fourteen-day march taken by Donal O’Sullivan Beare and his followers in 1603. Stretching almost the length of the country, the route leads walkers and cyclists through some of Ireland’s most beautiful and least explored landscapes.

The trail passes along the coastline of the Beara Peninsula, crosses multiple mountain ranges, follows sections of the River Shannon, and travels through the lake regions of Roscommon and Leitrim. Along the way, walkers encounter a rich variety of heritage sites, including prehistoric features, castle ruins, religious landmarks, and historic battle locations, many of which reflect the events of four centuries ago.
